About the Governors

The Governing Body Vision Statement

 We are committed to positively and robustly govern the school, ensuring it continuously strives to create the happy, caring and safe environment that every child deserves in order to fulfil their learning potential.


Our School Governors are all volunteers and they provide a strong link between the school, parent/carers and the local community.
The total number of governors is 12 made up of

  • 2 parent governors
  • 1 Local Authority governor
  • 1 Staff governor
  • 1 Headteacher
  • 7 co-opted governors

The education, happiness and well-being of the children at Fairway is the reason our governing body strive to provide encouragement, support and critical challenge to the Head Teacher and staff so that they provide the best possible education for your children.

Fairway is respected locally for its friendly and caring ethos and the way it values all children.  It is a happy and warm place with a calm atmosphere where each child’s learning, character and spirit can develop and grow to their full potential.  W.B Yeats said ‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire’.  We want to support and encourage fuelling that fire.

Governors have a unique role within the school in that they are not only committed to fulfilling their statutory responsibilities but also to encourage the highest standard of education is provided to the children.  All members of the Governing Body are volunteers and are dedicated to improving and building upon the excellent learning and teaching within the school.  This is achieved by being involved in the school as much as possible and visiting the school on a regular basis to observe the educational process of your children.

Several of the governors, myself included, help within the school on a regular basis, providing support within the classrooms, attending school trips, reading with the children and getting to know your children.  This allows us to have a real connection with the staff and children at Fairway.

Ofsted gave us a good rating in 2016 and the school and the governors are working hard together to consolidate and improve on this rating in the future.

The role of the Governing Body is a strategic one with three core functions:

  • ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  •   holding executive leaders to account for the educational       performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff and;
  • overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

The Governing Body meets regularly each term to ensure that we are fully supporting Fairway in its development and objectives for the education of your children.  As chair, I meet fortnightly with the Head Teacher to discuss progress and provide support as a sounding board and provide critical challenge.

Charging Policy

The school governors support the West Sussex advice on charging for school trips, this may be seen on application to the school. Where charging is not permissible parents are invited to make voluntary contributions. The school is unable to fund activities unless there is substantial support by way of voluntary contributions. If current circumstances make it difficult to meet the charge, please contact the headteacher in confidence to discuss whether it is possible to reach some mutual arrangement.
